Visiting St Joesph's, Placentia Bay

Recently Angie and I discovered an amazing Youtube channel called Skote Outdoors, about a couple (Matt and Kelly Clarke) who are homesteading on a resettled island in Placentia Bay called St Joseph's. All winter we talked about paddling out to visit them sometime, and this past weekend, the weather and life circumstances finally lined up and we were able to make it happen.

We left from Parker's Cove on the Burin Peninsula at about 9am after a 2 hr drive from Whitbourne. The weather was perfect. Sunny and almost no wind in the forecast...which is pretty rare for Newfoundland!

Total distance was about 23kms

Ready to rock

Angie very happy to be on the water

View facing south down Placentia Bay

Looking back with Parker's Cove in the distance

Absolutely stunning views

Going through Holloway Passage

Stopping for a rest at Burnt Island after about 45 mins

Heading East. A little more exposed here from the south so the water was no longer a mirror

Looking into the cabins at Little Harbour

St Joesph's in the distance

Heading towards the beach. We recognized this area from the youtube videos.

Pushthrough Passage. There was a bit if a current here, with the tide rising

The Eastern side of the island. Those who watch the show will recognize this view

Taking a break and talking to the neighbor, Patrick Picco. Small world in Newfoundland, after a few minutes of chatting we knew some of the same people.

Finally made it to St Joesph's!

All the farm animals are on the hill here. We could see and hear the pigs, sheep and goats

We were very happy to meet Kelly! She was super nice and friendly. Matt was away for a few hours and we didn't have time to hang around to meet him. Maybe next time!

Kelly suggested we visit Jigging Cove on our way back

So we stopped here for our lunch. Lovely spot for a swim

Final push to make it back to Parkers Cove. Slightly more wind on the way back, but hardly noticeable.

We got back to the car at 4:15pm. It was a long day given the two hr drive each way to the put in, but totally worth it!
